Facinora
Born In Fear
March 2009
Released: 2008, n/a Rating: 2.5/5 Reviewer: Bruce Sanchez Facinora is from Brazil. They play thrash. Really well. If someone handed me their demo BORN IN FEAR without any preamble, I would have thought, “Who were these guys?” Listening to this demo is like stepping into a time machine and spending 20 minutes in the 80s. From the first note to the last, Facinora seems determined to make its name the first in the new thrash movement. High speed riffs, palm-muted chugging sections, it’s all there. Yet, when I say it’s all there I can’t help but say it with a bit of disappointment. While the songs themselves are pure and clean old school thrash, they offer nothing unique. It’s all stuff that’s already been done. And the first song on the demo, “Empty Illusions” is a bit too inspired by “Fight Fire with Fire”. And when I say “inspired” I mean it’s pretty much a rip. The production, however, is spectacular. It’s definitely professional quality. But that doesn't redeem Facinora from being old-hat. I'm all for newer bands doing thrash, but it needs to be updated. Bottom line, if I want to listen to 80s era thrash then I’ll put in a 80s era thrash album. With this demo though, Facinora has demonstrated that they are talented and capable of writing good songs. Hopefully they can find their own sound or make themselves more distinct.
