Statues Fall
January 2015
Released: 2014, Massacre Records
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: JP

Edgedown is a relatively new Metal group from Germany. They have just released their debut album entitled STATUES FALL and it is pretty decent. Like many bands they started as a covers band, did some gigs and a demo and they got picked up by Massacre Records which is pretty good for an unknown band.

STATUES DOWN is a bit of a funny album to describe. When a reviewer looks at a CD they can learn certain things about the band and making interesting talking points or trivia to help the listener get a concept about the band. Edgedown are new, young and they have little that makes them stand out. They don’t have any guest stars, they don’t do a cover tune, they don’t really have a mascot, they didn’t use a big-name producer, they don’t have masks or stage names etc; it is almost as if they are a totally generic Metal band starting from scratch…except the music.

Fortunately the songs are quite strong when it comes down to Edgedown. They write and record a very balanced mix of classic Heavy Metal with hints of Melodic Metal. The songs have strong choruses and good crunchy guitars. Most of the cuts are conventional length and compositional style and they are not progressive or flashy. The tempos are mostly mid-paced but they do pick it up for a few faster songs and slow it down for a few ballads as well. The voice of Andreas Meixner is expressive reminding me a bit of some of the classic guys like Mike Vescara, or Jeff Scott Soto with range and power and a bit of grit.

I really liked STATUES DOWN, it is above average for a brand new band, but I think they are going to have to carve out a bit of an identity to compete in a crowded field. However these young guys have nailed the classic Metal sound and based on the strength of the songs and individual performances, I think they could have a pretty successful future.
