EyeHateGod
Confederacy Of Ruined Lives
November 2000
Released: 2000, Century Media Records
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Waspman

So the much-respected EyeHateGod has returned with their first full album of new material in almost five years. First reaction: so what? I confess that the reason for my lackluster response is my general unfamiliarity with the band's previous output. Of course, I had heard how great this band supposedly was, but had never experienced them for myself. All I can say is, Damn! I've been missing out! Besides having one of the best rafts of song titles that I've ever seen on one album, EHG play a pretty infectious brand of sludge rock. I played this album for the first time over a month ago, and haven't stopped spinning it since (well, except for the occasional foray into Supershine).

By now, I assume that most people know what EHG is all about and have decided whether or not to invest time and money in them. To those of you who have previously declined this great band's offerings - think again! You'll be immediately drawn into an evil world, filled with Iommi-inspired riffs, doomy grooves and angry vocals. Insanity on CD is the best way to describe it. Check out the pure evil of "Jack Ass In The Will Of God", or the 1-2 noise alchemy that is the combo of "Inferior And Full Of Anxiety" and ".001%". Of course, who can forget the pure Sabbath worship of "Last Year (She Wanted A Doll House", including a loving theft of one of Sabbath's most famous riffs (you figure out which one!).

Matt Bower's vocals are as sick as they ever were and the band is as down-tuned swampy as you remember (I've listened to some of their back catalogue since I got this CD). There's really not much more that I can say. If you loved EyeHateGod before, then you should already have this CD, if not, now is the perfect time to get into them. Go forth and search in hopes that ye shall find!
