Ex Dementia
In the Chapters of Horror
June 2009
Released: 2008, HPGD Productions
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: Aaron Yurkiewicz

Ex Dementia is a death gore trio from the beautiful Garden State of New Jersey. Tongue firmly planted in cheek, the band offers up some goofy, blood spattered fun throughout the 7 tracks on their latest EP, IN THE CHAPTERS OF HORROR. The band touts a couple of previous releases under its belt, but IN THE CHAPTERS OF HORROR is the first to receive any kind of noticeable distribution. Though the disc only offers 4 new tracks, an S.O.D. cover and two live cuts, it’s an enjoyable (albeit really, really short) listen.

The originals on the album walk the familiar line of 90s gore soaked death metal riffs and rhythms, with some high/low shrieks and groans carrying the vocals. The songs feature some snippets from various horror flicks, providing enjoyable levity to the subject matter. While certainly not technical or complex, the songs are fast and feature some memorable riffs and hooks. S.O.D.’s “Kill Yourself” is a by-the-numbers cover, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

What is a bad thing is the 2 live tracks that close the album. Featured are live versions of “Double Dose of Death” and “Thou Shall Repulse” from the full length of the same name, but the recording mics sound like they were firmly planted in the soundman’s rectum. The only thing that comes across with any kind of clarity is what sounds like a couple at the bar. Given the brevity of the disc, it’s a bit of a disappointment. Either some additional studio cuts (even more covers) would have been a better choice, but it is what it is.

For 7 bucks though, you can’t really go wrong here though. The 5 cuts that do shine are indeed pretty good and hopefully foreshadow some good things to come from Ex Dementia. Additionally, the cover art and CD inlay look sharp, boasting a comic book/graphic novel style presentation – proving that an indie release doesn’t have to have a crappy, hand drawn album cover. Fun, heavy tunes delivered with all the blood and guts you'd expect, IN THE CHAPTERS OF HORROR is definitely worth a listen.
