Edera
s/t
December 2001
Released: 2001, Independent
Rating: 3.2/5
Reviewer: Rick

The main pieces of Edera came together in 1994 when Valerio Valentini: vocals and Matteo Catarisano: keyboards get together and form their first project. They search for musicians who share their same vision and in 1997 the band forms a more steady lineup. A year later they have settled on the name Edera and yet a year later they have to replace both drums and bass and recruit Matteo Ungaro and Alex Ferraris respectivly to fill those positions. The lineup now consists of the aforementioned members plus Ryan Castana and Andrea Ungaro on guitars. The band describes their music as a combination of Queen and their originality in composing mixed with more metallic elements such as Gutter Ballet era Savatage and Queensryche.

The CD is 6 tracks that clock in at just over 23 minutes. The opener is "Left In The Power of the Storm". As if you can’t already tell by the title this song is about the bleak emptiness of the lonely and the loss of love. Seems most of the songs on the CD deal with some form of inner turmoil or emotion. "Broken Glass" rings in with its almost Paradise Lost gothic sound with lots of piano and melodic passages. "Paper World" contains some blistering guitar that gives the music a more aggressive edge and there are even some twin guitar leads! The Cd closes with the strangely titled "Pond". Again this is another song of lost love.

Edera might hold Savatage and Queensryche as influences but they sound a lot more like Paradise Lost. Not that they emulate them as much as they play a similar style full of emotional turmoil and torment. http://www.ederaweb.com
