Evil Masquerade is a new band from Denmark. The info note says that this should be a super group but judge by yourself….the only famous people included are members like Henrik (Royal Hunt), Henrik (Moahni Moahna, Zool and Wuthering Heights), Kasper (Wuthering Heights) and Dennis (Sinphonia).
Evil Masquerade started with Henrik who met up with the original singer in Royal Hunt at a club in Copenhagen, Denmark where he played with a local blues cover band. Henrik went on stage and jammed with the band and after the show they drank a few beers and the night ended with a visit to Henrik’s studio. The next morning they had done some recordings and they both felt that they had created something great together so now it was only to search for the right guys to join. Dennis and Kasper were contacted and after they heard the material they both said yes. Then the line-up was set and work on the album began. When three well known keyboardists heard the material they wanted to be on the album and they each contributed with their part on one song each (see the line-up). The debut contains 10 tracks including one intro and a bonus track. Henrik has done the production and Steen Mogensen (Royal Hunt, Coverstone) has done the mixing.
The includes information says that this is symphonic metal. However, if you read it carefully the musical description is theatrical metal. In part, I don’t agree with that description at all. I think this is fast melodic hard rock mixed with neo-classic metal. The theatrical metal description must come from the use of circus music (metal version) in some places. That combined with both the cover and the outfits they have on leads to the circus theme. Also, some of the songs have typical circus titles. Henrik is not one of the greatest singers ever but his voice fits the music. Dennis has a stable drum style and the same goes for Henrik on guitar - he handles his instrument well and the guest keyboard players have very intense playing styles.
My neighbor country Denmark shows that they have more to offer than the legends D.A.D, Royal Hunt and Pretty Maids. Evil Masquerade sound really good and they have the potential to go far with this strong debut album. I don’t have any favorite song from the album since every one of them is good. I hope that they are going on tour so we can catch them live.
