Exhumed
Platters of Splatter
February 2005
Released: 2004, Relapse Records Rating: 3.0/5 Reviewer: Lord of the Wasteland Exhumed’s brand of gore/grind has always left me on the fence. For medical school grind, I’ll take Carcass, while my gore leanings tend to favor Cannibal Corpse and Mortician. Exhumed has just always left me indifferent but many people find them to be the best thing since sliced bread. Different strokes for different folks. Well for those who worship at the scalpel of Exhumed, the band has put together a sprawling collection of its early EPs, rarities, tribute album tracks and other such collectibles as PLATTERS OF SPLATTER. The CD is available in two formats: standard two disc and also an ultra-rare (1,000 copies were pressed) three-disc set that includes demos, live cuts, alternate versions and…a Madonna cover?! As is to be expected, the material on PLATTERS OF SPLATTER varies in sound quality from pretty good to downright horrendous. Some tracks are less than a minute long (“Grubs” and “Disfigured Corpse” are four and five SECONDS long, respectively) and are over before you know it in typical grind fashion. Anyone who fancies Carcass will see the similarities between the two bands as Exhumed draws heavily from the Brit’s influence. The second disc of PLATTERS OF SPLATTER is the most Carcass-like complete with muddy production which causes everything to bleed together into a mess of blastbeats and gurgled vocals. Like Carcass, the later-era material explores more melody and benefits considerably from the superior production. A few covers including the aforementioned Madonna track, as well as classics from King Diamond, Possessed, Sarcofago and Carcass are also worth checking out. While not wholly original, Exhumed does what they do well. This is not pretty stuff and will not be everyone’s cup of tea but for the Exhumed enthusiast, PLATTERS OF SPLATTER just may satisfy their hunger. ![]()
