Evergrey
In Search of Truth
October 2001
Released: 2001, InsideOut Music
Rating: 4.7/5
Reviewer: El Cid

The band keeps evolving. That’s it; this is better than their last 2 efforts in my opinion. I don’t know if you’ll agree with me, but I think EVERGREY have improved their sound enormously by giving the keyboards a much more important part of song structures, be it as keyboards or piano sound, it really gives a very big push to all the songs.

This whole gem, is a concept album, a very strange one at that. It tells the story of a man who fears light and dark and then finds out he was abducted by Aliens (EHHHH???) and throughout the album he tries to find out what exactly happened to him. The most interesting thing about this album is that it establishes EVERGREY as a very original band, they sound like nobody but EVERGREY. The opening track here “The Masterplan” begins with a spoken sample that sets the mood on a dark and somber tone that prepare you for what’s to come. The rest of the album is a roller coaster because of its constant changes of pace and the multidimensional music and arrangements that populate it. “Rulers of the mind” features some great keyboard parts that will fuse with heavier and faster parts that along with Tom Englund’s distinctive voice merge into a very trademark sound.

Despite an impressive array of truly great songs, track 7 “Dark Waters” makes everything else pale in comparison, this beautiful piece of art features everything from intense drumming and riffing, to very harmonic passages to a choir that would make Therion bow their heads and listen.

In all this is a fantastic release and it’s highly advised that you get it as soon as you can.
