The good people at Black Lotus have sent us a number of new releases and I am going to do a little focus on four releases on this veteran Greek label. I enjoyed Enshadowed last disc from but gave it an average grade of 2.5 and said they would either disappear and be forgotten or gain a little cult-like fan base for their traditional black metal vision. Well I don’t mind admitting when I am wrong and in this case I was wrong.
Enshadowed have actually remade themselves with a new direction and sound and have made a larger number of cosmetic changes. For example they have a new logo, new look, better cover art, and as mentioned in the last review an all-new line-up. Necrotormentor is known just ‘Necro’ and bassist Northerial was replaced by Diastropheus (who handles keyboards as well) unless he just changed his name as well. The corpse-paint and spikes are gone and the blurry black & white photos are replaced by a very cool digitally edited shots of the band. The new vocalist Snegrodron is now the main lyricist which shows as the lyrics are not as blunt or satanic but more dark and sophisticated. The strong anti-religious sentiment is still fully intact however.
The main change in sound comes from the fact that now most of the band members participate in the song-writing, which is more dark and dynamic but at the same time loses that pure black metal sound. A concept album of sort is divided into two main chapters and the album starts with a cut ‘The Fire Burns’ and ends with the cut, ‘The Fire Goes Out’ thus closing the circle. The most noticeable change is the injection of more death metal into the bands sound. The songs are touch slower, more atmospheric, a bit more dynamic and the arrangements are more interesting. I don’t like the term but ‘maturity’ comes to mind, although I don’t want to suggest the last album was ‘immature’ by default. Perhaps sophisticated is a better word. ‘Jesus Christ Cage’ (Part II) obviously a continuation of the song from the debut sounds very little like the part one, as it has way more keyboards, piano and ambient somber parts.
A welcome improvement and sure to be noticed in the Greek extreme music scene.
