Electric Wizard
Time to Die
December 2014
Released: 2014, Spinefarm Records
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Addison Herron-Wheeler

Electric Wizard can do no wrong. They aren’t a groundbreaking band by any means; it’s pretty easy to guess how each album will sound – they stick to plodding, simple doom riffs, predictable lyric patterns, and memorable although slow hooks. Still, their overall imagery and theme, and the flawless way they pull of their songs, make every album and song at least worth checking out, and usually worth listening to again and again.

Their latest release, TIME TO DIE, is no exception. The disc starts off with the misanthropic and catchy “Incense for the Damned,” a song about smoking weed when you’re a lost soul anyway. The whole album is laced with incredible amounts of feedback, the sounds of a bong, or cauldron bubbling, and samples about satanic cults. There are some other real gems on the album as well, such as the second title track, and the especially dark “We Love the Dead.”

As long as you know they are tongue in cheek, and realize that there is a specific sound Electric Wizard goes for that they aren’t going to stray too far from, I think this is an album any metal fan could enjoy. Of course, doom fans will like it the most, and speed freaks who listen to nothing but grindcore might lose patience. But albums like this are the very root of metal, and should be part of every collection.
