Attera Orbis Terrarum-Part 1 (DVD)
Released: 2007, Regain Records
After a relatively long period of inactivity (2009-2014) Dark Funeral in the spring of 2015 released a vinyl single. That act inspired me to go back and look at their first DVD, ATTERA ORBIS TERRARUM-Part 1
Regain Records did a good job with the presentation of the bands 2007 DVD. There is an 12 page booklet with lots of photos, the band members signatures , liner notes and so on. The two-disc set is a very good value with three full professionally recorded shows and some bonus material. The graphics are decent and it is easy to navigate through. In case you are wondering the title means ‘Destroy The World’ which seems appropriate.
DVD 1 has a two shows, one from Poland in 2005 and one from Holland in 2006. They are pro-shot concerts with multi-camera angles and some good post- production effects added, black and white footage, slow-motion shots, and the song titles added as a graphic at the beginning of each track. They are very well done. The sound quality is just fine and the band rips through and hour covering all the material. The Polish concert has a much bigger stage and better lights but that is to be expected because it was a Metalmania appearance, not a club gig. If I had to choose I liked the Paris gig best, wider shots of the whole, fewer close-up’s, more crowd shots etc.
DVD 2 has another show from the same tour the Aterra Totus Sanctus tour of 2006. I’m question the purpose of having two almost identical shows on the DVD. Yes, it is good value, but in reality having two virtually identical shows does not add much. The concerts were filmed 12 days apart and the set list is exactly the same and even the shows are the same length at approx 68 minutes each.
For me the highlight on the disc is the bonus stuff on DVD 2. There are 11 songs filmed by fans (essentially bootlegs) captured from 1994-1997 including a clip from their very first show in Oslo, Norway on May 4th 1994. It is not often you get to look back and see a bands very first show, although it is becoming more common now with the decrease in price of video recording material and the fact that everyone has a camera in their pocket. The sound quality is pretty poor as these things trend to be but it was cool to see them do some old covers of Von and Bathory and play in tiny bars around Europe. Lastly there is a video for 'Atrum Regina'.
This is a definitive live document of the first 15 years or so of the band I apologize I didn’t review Part 2 as well but I don’t own it…yet!
