Die Hard
Evil Always Return
February 2009
Released: 2008, Abyss Records
Rating: 2.5/5
Reviewer: Bruce Sanchez

EVIL ALWAYS RETURN is the first EP from Die Hard. And it’s a pretty strong showing from the Swedish trio.

It starts off with an old school trash riff played with death metal tones. That’s how most of the album is. A mix between thrash and death, peppered with black metal theatrics. For the most part it works out fairly well. It’s like hearing a death metal band cover a thrash band: mostly enjoyable, but nothing unique. There’s the obligatory song about necromancy, entitled “Necromantic Action” with the awesome line, “Necromantic sodomy precious penile sorcery”. I’m really hoping that line is intentionally meant to be funny. Other than that, there’s not much else to it. There aren’t even any solos, save for one that’s a Slayer type flail about the neck in “The Weak Lead the Blind”.

The album is short; six tracks clocking in at 20 minutes. That’s about the right amount of time for this. There’s a lot of promise here. Die Hard could definitely benefit from the addition of a second guitarist (who can solo), because true thrash is done with two guitars.
