The Deceived
December 2014
Released: 2014, Metal Blade Records
Rating: 2.0/5
Reviewer: UK Team

DICTATED are a Death Metal band from The Netherlands have just now released their second full-length album, The Deceived. The production on the album is clear, but with not entirely pristine clean, as there are parts which have the muddy sound of classic Death Metal. The band resorts to adding some breakdown-like "groove" sections here and there which kinda put me off a bit, but there's still some decent guitar work here and there during the faster sections. Still, there is not a lot here that has not been heard before.

One thing about The Deceived by DICTATED is that there are really no standout tracks, as the album sort of works better as whole. Mid way through the album, though, the listener can already more or less predict what the band will do next. "Dispossession" and "They Live, They Suffer, They Die " were the most inspired songs for me, with the band breaking away from the formula of the rest of the album. Other tracks like "This Is to All" and "No Mercy for Cowards" start off promising but are brought down by the predictable groove parts and the overall tired feel one gets from them. The band just sort of drops riffs that have already been heard countless times before.

Though The Deceived is not downright terrible, there is something lacking about it, as if DICTATED had the ideas but where uninspired when it came time to lay them down in the studio. There's a good number of inspired guitar riffs but then there's a lot of stuff that sounds flatly laid out here. If the band wants to integrate ideas from modern stuff into old school Death Metal, they should at least give it some identity, maybe analyze how they can do it differently from other countless bands who resort to using the same tricks.
