Released: 2016, Independent

Whilst I am not well schooled in the world of the NWOBHM, I am slowly learning about it thanks to books by Martin Popoff and John Tucker. My introduction to the genre was the early Maiden and Def Lep album which at the time I just regarded as Metal. Once the late 80’s came and I got deeper into Metal and Metallica in particular I heard the name Diamond Head thanks to their covers of “Am I Evil?”, “Helpless” and later on, “The Prince”. As a young Metalhead I thought these were fantastic songs yet being from a small town with no record shop except for Woolco I had no access to the originals. As time passed and I began ‘Life’ many songs/bands were stowed away in the back of my mind and bands like Diamond Head were one of those. When Martin Popoff released his book SMOKIN’ VALVES I began to dive into the genre. I then ordered John Tucker’s book NEAT & TIDY and both of these have helped me tremendously. Until now my only CD by the band was a double CD entitled AM I EVIL? which I recommend checking out. Now it’s 2016 and they have just released their first album in nearly a decade.
As I am only familiar with the music on the compilation CD this disc is my first time discovering ‘New’ music by the band and I am loving it.
This album is basically guitarist Brian Tatler from the classic band and new musicians but that doesn’t stop it from sounding like Diamond Head of old. The songs all sound modern while holding onto that Diamond Head sound that we enjoy. Sadly vocalist Sean Harris is no longer in the band but Rasmus Bom Andersen fits in perfectly. His vocal style and range is the near perfect match for the music and I bet he will nail the old tunes live flawlessly.
For this self titled album songs like “Wizards Sleeve” can easily stand up next to the classics. The entire album has that NWOBHM vibe and sound to it yet polished and modern. Make sense? Hard to describe, yet once you hear it you will know exactly what I mean. If you are familiar with any Diamond Head you will instantly recognise this album as them. They, like Motorhead have a sound that you associate with them that works and years later they can issue a record that sounds new and fresh while maintaining that unique sound.
This is a great record that I feel you should check out. I have the digital advance, the CD and I am ordering the LP as I think this needs to be properly spun. As 2016 continues I will be reading Popoff’s latest 2 books on the NWOBHM that he released in the latter part of 2015 and dive deeper into the genre and checking out more Diamond Head. For now I recommend buying this album.
