Dante Fox
Under the Seven Skies
May 2007
Released: 2007, Frontiers Records/Zink Music
Rating: 2.5/5
Reviewer: Anders Sandvall

Dante Fox was formed by the singer Sue Willetts in 1989 with the goal of establishing a melodic hard rock act. When the line-up was complete, the work on the debut album began. At the end of 1996 the band was signed and later on that same year their debut album UNDER SUSPICION was released.

After a few years and a few albums, the band was put on ice - until they got an offer to support Girlschool and Vixen on their British summer tour in 2005. The only remaining members on this third album are Sue Willetts and Tim Manford. Dante Fox has stayed true to Willetts’ goal and still plays light melodic hard rock. Willetts’ voice is perfect for singing this kind of music; she takes the songs to a higher level with her voice.

The main focus is placed on lead vocals and guitar; keyboards are used in moderation and don’t have any big parts in the sound-picture. Music-wise, Dante Fox has a lot in common with Robin Beck’s latest solo album and the Heart’s old albums.

“Firing Guns”, “Walking the Line”, “Lucky Ones (Born Tonight in the Setting Sun)”, and “Under the Seven Skies” are all better songs and are a mix of light melodic hard rock with somewhat edgy guitars.

The main things that I have against this album are the lyrics and the ballads. We have yet another album jammed with songs about love and heartache; it’s getting tiring to only hear songs about love when it comes to this music genre. Please invent something new and expand your lyrical content. Those are the two factors that drag down the rating; otherwise Dante Fox delivers a solid album that fans shouldn’t hesitate to buy.
