Under Attack
August 2016
Released: 2016, Nuclear Blast
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: JP

I’ve always preferred the Big Four of Germanic thrash (Destruction, Kreator, Sodom and Tankard) to that other big four, primarily because the Germany bands and more productive, prolific, exciting and mainly, they still actually play Thrash Metal instead of a watered down version of it.

It seems like a long time since the last Destruction album, SPIRITUAL GENOCIDE back in 2012. It is one of the longest stretches betweens albums in their career. As they say, it was ‘worth the wait’. UNDER ATTACK is album #14 and the trio is intact, maintaining the roster as the last pair of studio albums. The band is still on Nuclear Blast and pretty much everything else is stable and familiar. We get the classic logo, a nice fiery skull/exploding earth piece of art, (which has been done many times before) but go-to artists Gyula Havancsak nails it. Once again the band delivers 10 tracks of pure thrash , with a couple of bonus tracks on various international pressings.

What more is there to say? Everything is perfect in camp Destruction and we love it. No change necessary, they just write and play classic thrash in their own style. The songs are fast, relentless, loaded with blazing solos, double kick drums, harsh vocals courtesy of Schmier who sounds better than ever. I can’t see any thrash fan not liking this record. I don’t want to even go deeper and micro-analyze the songs, that is not the point. From the opening strains of acoustic guitar of the title track to the final shout of ‘Stigmatized’ 48 minutes later the album kills post to post. A highlight for me is ‘Pathogenic’ but any one of these whiplash-inducing, neck-breakers could be your next favourite thrasher.

When I asked my friend ‘The Thrashmaster’ what he thought of the new Destruction he promptly replied, ‘It’s Destruction!’ No higher compliment is needed.
