Devil’s Slingshot
Clinophobia
October 2008
Released: 2008, Mascot Records
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: Celtic Bob

Devil’s Slingshot is the new project of Billy Sheehan and Tony MacAlpine. My first encounter of hearing these two players was back in the mid 90’s when I owned the David Lee Roth cassette EAT “EM & SMILE and a buddy of mine had one of Tony’s tapes (MAXIMUM SECURITY I believe). Wow!! That really dates people.

As I have stated before; instrumental albums are a different breed and targeted to a select group of the music buying public. This recording is no different as it is geared towards guitarists and bassists mainly. As with most albums of this style the musicianship is first rate and the sound quality and production is deadly with everything mixed just right so every instrument and note can be heard clearly. It is the track “Def Bitch Blues” that catches your attention as it begins with some killer drumming. After the intro the song goes pretty much into the guitar heavy style like the rest of the album. On “Ocean” which is the closest to a ‘Real’ song we get the guitar almost ‘talks’ where the words should have been. Apart from this pair of songs the rest is your typical instrumental album.

For the musician in you this is a great disc but for the rest of us it may not be a disc that will get repeated plays.
