Destruction
D.E.V.O.L.U.T.I.O.N
November 2008
Released: 2008, AFM Records/Sound Pollution
Rating: 4.5/5
Reviewer: Anders Sandvall

Finally, the German legends Destruction are back with a new studio album. Fans have been waiting since 2005 when their latest album INVENTOR OF EVIL came. The band released THRASH ANTHEMS last year but that was only re-recordings of the bands old classical tunes. This year does the band celebrates 25 year in the business. The band has invited many well-known guests to participate on the new album. We find Harry (ex- Destruction), Gary Holt (Exodus), Vinnie Moore (UFO), Jeff Waters (Annihilator) and Jacob Hansen (Invocator/Anubis Gate) amongst many others performing with lead guitar solo’s on the album. The 25-year celebration motivated the band to write more edgy and rawer material than before and the band says “The new material is very dynamic crashing straight in your face”.

Destruction continues delivering the same old school thrash metal that made them one of the top bands in their genre. The only musical change the band has gone through over the years is, in my opinion, that they have re-fined their writing skills. Otherwise, are they still as ruthless, dangerous and mean as ever. 10 fresh songs are featured on this album and what a masterpiece D.E.V.O.L.U.T.I.O.N is. I was very pleased when I had heard the album for the first time and I wanted to hear more. It feels like they really have put some extra serious work into the album and it feels like the band are more hungry and eager to play than before.

“Devolution”, “Last Desperate Scream”, “Urge (The Greed Of Gain)”, “Odyssey Of Frustration” and “No One Shall Survive” are some really fast, brutal and mean songs. This is pure thrash with a brilliant twist. No one can write music like Schmier and this is how Destruction should sound all the time. “Elevator To Hell”, “Vicious Circle – The 7 Deadly Sins” and “Inner Indulgence” are a few slightly calmer songs but it’s still as heavy as ever. These songs are also a brilliant example of how the band has managed to refine their sound and taken it into the 21st century. Maybe the band should think of taking in a permanent second guitarist all of the time to make the guitar sound a little fuller and more massive. Now that they have brought in guests on guitar I find the guitar sound sounding much richer and fuller and it sounds better. If they took in another axe-man Siffringer would not have to think about delivering guitar solos and could focus on rhythm guitar.

Jacob Hansen has produced the album in his own studio in Denmark and he has made an incredible job with the production. When you push play you’re greeted by a massive and mean wall of shredding guitars that totally run over you and that’s the way it should be while listening to Destruction. This is a simply amazing album and I lack more words to describe it than brilliant. No fan of the band is going to be disappointed and this disc can be a classical one in retrospective. Destruction is going to be my soundtrack to the upcoming autumn.
