April Rain
August 2009
Released: 2009, RoadRunner
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Alan Gilkeson

It began as a mere side project, morphed into a touring group, and now they're a band. Welcome back Delain. No longer just Martijn Westerholt's little side gig, Delain now features the work of five solid musicians crafting symphonic gothic Metal, a bit different from the debut, yet once again successful. Together they've transformed into a crusade march, mastering their genre, etching licks and vocal melodies in the brain.

Charlotte wessels voice sounds incredible and thankfully accent free and hypnotic, combined with her physical beauty she's the perfect face to front Delain, moving forward into North American waters. Even the song she wrote for the album, 'On The Other side', which she calls a"...very personal song that means a lot to me" could plausibly be a single released to radio. Westerholt's vision, once gazed another direction, now focused on a band discovering it's own way, but with enough experience to immediately propel themselves to the top of the heap in the female fronted gothic game.

The song writing, refined and intense, backs up the vocal extremely well. While the focus is certainly on Wessels voice, the underscore is tragic and beautiful all at once, supporting her emotion, driving her just as she does the music. Catchy choruses are all over this disc, majestic refrains completely capture the memory. A slickly produced keeper!
