Progressive powermetal from the United States. I didn’t think that I would ever write that sentence in a review. But here I am and I have a bonafide progressive powermetal band from the good old U. S. of A. Defyance have been around for 11 years but I have only heard about them recently. I liked the band so much that I featured a track from Time Lost on The Metal Rules Radio Show which airs on Snakenet Metal Radio. Defyance hail from Knoxville, Ia and as I said play a blend of progressive powermetal which at one moment is technical and the next is a twin guitar metal rampage. The band consists of Brent A. Scott: guitars, Doug Beary: drums, Scott Andreas: vocals, Rob McGrath: bass and Marcus Peterson; guitars. This is the 4th release from Defyance. In 1989 they released a self titled 4 song demo and followed that up with a 5 song recording entitled "Voices Within" in 1992. The band then underwent some personnel changes and released "Amaranathine" in 1996. In 1999 the band again went into the studio and recorded Time Lost with new vocalist Scott Andreas.

Like I said before, Defyance play progressive powermetal but its very light on the keyboards and heavy on the twin guitar leads ala Iron Maiden. "Turn To Yesterday" opens up the disc with a great mix of prog and power. Andreas vocals fit perfectly the music that the band creates. "Shadows in my Mind" contains some great twin guitar harmonies and has one of the catchiest chorus’ on the disc. The band get into more of a progressive mode with "From The Sky" and follow that up by changing into powermetal gear with "The Game". This is the song which I showcased on The Metal Rules Radio Show and it contains some great guitar harmonies and even some piano thrown in for good measure.

Its great to hear great metal bands from North America.Defyance have been around for a long time and its about time they finally get some recognition for their dedication to metal. "Time Lost" is a good CD that shows that this band has all the tools necessary to become more well known in the metal circles of the world. They fall somewhere in between the all out progmetal of Dream Theater and the powerprog of ShadowKeep and Old Queensryche. If you want to find out more about the band check out
