Danny Grawbarger
Deep In Space
April 2012
Released: 2012, Independent
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Waspman

Being Canadian, and from the Toronto area, I take some pride when artists from this country, and specifically this region, manage to make a name for themselves. Although he is just 21 years old, Toronto’s (by way of North Bay) Danny Grawbarger is already starting to make a name for himself as something of a guitar wizard. DEEP IN SPACE is his first release, and even includes contributions from Glen Drover (Megadeth, Eidolon) and U.K.-based Chapman Guitars spokesman Ben Wilshire.

DEEP IN SPACE starts off with a bang; “Apollo Opus” is an up-tempo riffster that immediately shows off Grawbarger’s skills on the guitar. And while his performance is flawless, it’s the song writing that grabbed me the most as, unlike so many instrumental songs, it actually has a flow, a definable melody, and a destination. Excellent! The song perfectly sets the tone for the rest of the album. Next up is “Collision Course” and again it’s a flawlessly executed song with jaw-dropping soloing.

Don’t worry; this won’t be one of those reviews that goes track by track through the album. Suffice it to say that DEEP IN SPACE is an enjoyable journey, filled with tremendous songs played with a ridiculous amount of skill. That said, there are some tracks that don’t quite live up to the standard set by the first two songs (“Rising” is kind of dull, and “Treasure Chest” is a poor closer to the album), but by and large, this is a great effort.

I’ve never been a huge fan of instrumental metal albums, but DEEP IN SPACE is one that I can easily listen to for pure enjoyment. Danny Grawbarger obviously has a ton of talent – here’s hoping he is awarded the attention he deserves.
