Deletere
De Ritibus Morbiferis
April 2015
Released: 2015, Sepulchral Productions
Rating: 4.0/5

If you like collecting demos and hearing what a band sounded like before they stepped into a professional studio, then Canada’s Deletere have compiled everything you’d expect to hear from a Canadian outfit who have been taking on the Black Metal world for the best part of six years.

Album opener ‘Credo’ has instrumentation that would conjour up images of Cthulhu and R’Lyeh and the impending doom being reigned upon humanity by any metal head who is familiar with Lovecraft. There are keys like a church organ and a very loud and chainsaw style rawness to second track ‘Une Lampee de cigue’.

One thing I like about demo compilations is that they can explore the wide range of sounds a band delved into before developing their own signature tune. ‘Le Caveau’ is quite entrancing and will be good for anyone who follows Alcest and Decline of the I or any other prominent post black metal group. It’s nice to see a band explore every subgenre in their early days and ‘Milites Pestilentiae’ reminded me a lot of Funeral Fog and even Morbid.

There really is something for everyone here on this record, even people wondering how Burzum would sound if they’d made black metal similar to Immortal as this band have melded together all the right signature clichés of black metal from its roots to the wide variety available today.

Canada is on the rise when it comes to American Black Metal so expect a lot of interesting stuff to come from this band in the near future.
