Deep Purple
NOW What?! Gold Edition
February 2014
Released: 2014, Ear Music
Rating: 4.5/5
Reviewer: Celtic Bob

Last year Deep Purple released their 19th studio album; NOW What?! to much praise from fans and critics. I am one of those people that really enjoyed the album and it was a staple on my turntable, ipod and in the vehicle throughout the year and it earned one of the top spots in my year end list. Now we get the deluxe ‘Gold’ edition with a couple of bonus tracks and a live disc recorded on the current tour. This is where it gets confusing......Does this review go under the CD Title of GOLD EDITION or NOW WHAT?! LIVE TAPES? My LP copy is just the ‘Live’ material while my CD copy is the ‘Gold’ version with bonus tracks and ‘Live’ disc. Hmmmm....?

For the sake of continuity I have entered the review under ‘Gold Edition’ so a search for NOW WHAT?! will bring it up easier vs. ‘Live’. I will however concentrate on the ‘Live’ portion of the release as that is the bulk of material.

While only a handful of songs on the LIVE TAPES portion of the set are newer songs we are treated to a few lesser heard Purple songs. For the 2013 tour Gillan sounds to be in great shape. His vocals are perfect with no signs of strain or fatigue as they have on some past recordings and shows. As usual Paice and Glover don’t miss a beat and sound phenomenal. Unfortunately we do not get a full concert instead a handful of

performances from various shows throughout the past year. It’s hearing the newer and lesser heard tracks that are the most interesting. How many live versions of “Smoke On The Water” have we heard? Hearing how new tunes such as “Vincent Price” come off live on stage is where a band is really judged on their musicianship. One thing that is very noticeable is that Steve Morse’s guitar is slightly buried even when Gillan says ‘Hey Stevie’ in “Smoke On The Water”. His playing is fantastic but a little too low in the mix which is a disappointment.

Another fantastic Purple release but could have easily been issued as a stand alone Live release. These ‘Expanded’, ‘Deluxe’, ‘Special’...etc editions are getting a bit much and fans are getting annoyed at having to purchase multiple copies of the same album to get all the recorded material.
