Damnation Army is a newer one-man band from Sweden founded by Thomas Nyholm. Prior to this album, he released two demos and the debut THE ART OF OCCULT in 2004 which was an album that went over really well in the underground metal scene. I really wanted this album to be good and sound hard and mean, but it doesn’t.
Nyholm gives us something that should sound like dark heavy metal mixed with black metal, but it’s just a mess. There is only one tempo: slow and grinding. The few songs that caught my attention were easily forgotten the next day. All of the songs blur together and nothing musically constructive happens whatsoever. Nyholm can’t sing and it’s a waste of time listening to this album. The only thing Nyholm should be credited for is being a skilled multi-instrumentalist.
The album is 40 minutes long, but it feels like it never ends. The lyrics are, of course, about death and other morbid stuff. The production isn’t anything special either. I’m not going to write any more about this album; I think you all can imagine what I think of it. If it sounds interesting to you, buy it, but please think twice before you do.
