Defile
Demo
June 2002
Released: 2001, Independent
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: Rick

Its not every day that a CD drops in my mailbox for review that is from a band comprised of four 15 year olds. What is even more interesting is that they are good!

Defile hail from Los Angeles and play death metal that is heavily influenced by thrash. The vocals are of the deep guttural variety and the music is full of shredding guitars and excellent drumming. The lineup is Jamie (vocals), Dylan (drums), Lior (guitar) and Mike (bass). After about a year together the band has released this 4-song demo. “Lost Hope” kicks off the disc with a liberal dose of hate. This is the best track on the disc. Jamie delivers some brutal vocals while Dylan is a whirlwind behind the drum kit. It's hard to believe that these guys are only 14 years old. They play with a poise that belies their years. The listener is pummelled into submission with the excellent “Machete Burn,” which leads into the equally brutal but more groove-influenced closer “Miscarriage of Justice”.

It's great to see some new American metal bands. There are too many kids these days that think that mallcore is the be all and end all of metal. Defile proves that there is a new generation of American metalheads waiting in the wings to take over for the big guys when they get their shot.
