Stinking Up The Night
November 2006
Released: 2006, Black Lodge/Sound Pollution
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Anders Sandvall

Deathbreath is a new band consisting of old metal veterans. They are led by Nicke Andersson (Ex- Entombed, The Hellacopters, The Solution etc). Guesting on lead vocals are two well-known names: Jörgen Sandström (ex-Enttombed, ex- Grave etc) and Scott Carlson.

Deathbreath is an old-school death metal trio with a raw and primitive sound in the same vein as Nihilist, Autopsy, Venom, and Repulsion. Nicke Andersson is behind the drums, and it sounds like it’s been a while since he’s played death metal drums because the music and beat are sometimes a bit sloppy. That’s something minor; I think it’s pure fun to hear him behind the drums again, which goes a long way for me. The music is nothing new, but it is very fine.

The album was recorded at Acetone Studio in Stockholm, Sweden and the production sounds a lot like it did back in the 80’s, which I guess was just how Andersson wanted it to sound. All of the material is high-caliber, and it pierces your ears right away. The album promo was delievered as a cassette which must have been Andersson’s idea - he’s an old vinyl freak who thinks music sounds better on LP than CD.

Deathbreath is a brilliant album and is one of the better things Andersson has done, but then again everything he touches turns into gold. STINKING UP THE NIGHT is an album for old death metal geezers or for the younger ones that want to know what death metal sounded like back when it was new and fresh.
