Deep Purple
Graz 1975
November 2014
Released: 2014, Ear Music
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: Celtic Bob

Another edition in the Overseas Live series of Deep Purple releases. This time we get the Mk III line-up of the group which features David Coverdale on vocal and Glen Hughes on bass. A stellar bunch of musicians that are incredibly talented but they just lack that little something that the Mark II had.

I am a Purple fan but not to the extent of owning everything ever released. I do own a sizable amount of their catalog with recording from just about every incarnation of the band. This era of Purple was short lived as Ritchie Blackmore left and the late Tommy Bolin joined to replace him and the even shorter live Mk IV was formed.

The first thing that hits you when you play this CD is the bass. It is very prominent in the mix, maybe a little too much. The overall sound quality is a little flat for a better word. It sounds a little dead for a live performance. The bands performance is top notch but the sound quality is lacking that certain something.

The ‘New’ songs are what really make this release. Yes, “Smoke On The Water” and “Space Truckin’” are great but we’ve heard them countless times so hearing them perform songs from the latest albums is a welcomed treat. Coverdale’s voice is just amazing. He really sounds good. His vocals are powerful and he hits the highs with apparent ease. Unfortunately Blackmore’s guitar is mixed way too low and at times you don’t even notice it. This is a crime as he was such an integral part of Purple. He left shortly after to form Rainbow.

This release is the near perfect glimpse of the BURN and STORMBRINGER era of the band. The biggest issue with this is the extended ‘Jam’ segments where Coverdale just wails. This release could have easily been more enjoyable had they given the complete show.
