Those jolly good early times... you still remember them, don´t you? I mean, if you just ever happened to be involved with the early 80´s / mid 90´s tape trading scene, you surely made a bunch of great discoveries as far as underground metal bands at that time, were concerned, right? I surely did. I thank the underground metal scene for eternity for introducing me such names as Morbid Angel, Incubus, Death Angel, Mantas (pre-Death), Autopsy, Necrovore, Sarcofago, Chakal, Nihilist, Vio-lence, Destruction, Morgoth, Carnage, etc. etc. etc. - and so do these four guys in this San Diego -based Death Metal act Deathevocation who wanted to create music that embodied the same sound and ideals of bands like Autopsy, Bolt Thrower, Morgoth, Asphyx, Dismember and Nihilist - to name only a few. They even took the name of Deathevokation from the first song on Dismember´s 1988 demo if you were thinking why the name has so familiar ring in it. Those ´early days´ were unspoiled times of metal; unity, beers, headbanging and friendship, like they have also said wisely.
The band´s BLOOD demo contains 3 actual songs plus one intro and two outros. As for those songs, you should go backwards and see what bands they consider as their main influences because they indeed have been influenced and inspired by all those bands they have listed on their info kit themselves. Unpolished, heavy, brutal and raw early ´90s -tinged old school Death Metal is what they are all about - hardly more, hardly less. The title track of this ´demo´ does a splendid job of reminding me of the greatness of Autopsy here and there (I mean, those slower parts) which I hope they churn out more in their songs in the future. They just reek of the ancient road of underground Death Metal that many bands once traveled so successfully, and ceased to exist for a multiple number of reasons. Luckily Deathevocation has the determination and dedication to capture some of that ´ancient feel´ back from the past times - and they are doing alright with it.
And if you got hungry for them by reading what was said about them in this very review, keep your appetite for a bit longer, and wait ´til you will hear Deathevokation´s debut album, entitled THE CHALICE OF AGES, to be released in the fall of 2006 on Xtreem Music. Some songs on it will be "Infinity Blights the Flesh", "Day of Shadows", "The Chalice of Ages" amongst others.
