Individual Thought Patterns
March 2005
Released: 1993, Relativity Records
Rating: 4.5/5
Reviewer: El Cid

So yeah, HUMAN was a monster, so is INDIVIDUAL THOUGHT PATTERNS. Cynic went to studio around this time to record their masterpiece FOCUS so Chuck lost Sean Reinert and Paul Masvidal as members of Death. That alone would have been a huge blow to the heart of any band… any band but this one! Evil Chuck got more Evil and just went and recruited legends Gene Holgan and Andy Laroque. No small feat!

So where does this leave us? Things change but progression prevails! INDIVIDUAL THOUGHT PATTERNS could not be HUMAN Pt2, simply because the band had member changes and when you have names this big come in and out you MUST acknowledge their input is very important and simply determining in the sound and direction the band achieves.

The progression in this album delves into a more Fusion/Death direction though it’s not that simple. Gene Holgan being not as Jazz inclined as Sean Reinert, the drum sound has changed. It didn’t get better, it didn’t get worse, it got different. It got faster, more intense and smoother in the tempo changes, which is a trademark Holgan gift.

The bass is still a monster, DiGiorgio’s licks are a bit more in the background due to the new drumming key, but they are there, no mistakes! And finally what can I tell you about Chuck and Andy Laroque’s shredding skills? It doesn’t get any better than this tandem. Hmmm… maybe the Amott’s in a VERY good and VERY inspired day!

In all, another large step and very welcome one in Death’s impressive career. You simply can’t go wrong.
