Deals Death
Point Zero Solution
October 2013
Released: 2013, Universal Music and Spinefarm records
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: UK Team

Having forged in 2009, when the band were in college, it has been a busy time for Deals Death. In the years that followed they have left their mark upon Japan, Finland and the UK, whilst most notably been sharing stages with the likes of Scar Symmetry and Hypocrisy. Their latest endeavourer Point Zero Solution laments the band’s growth as they further harness the style to a new level of maturity.

‘Point Zero Solution’ opens with a strong use of orchestral grandeur, pounding drums and steady riffs. A spoken dialogue sets the scene, before plunging into eccentric metallic guitars that pulverises their way through with gliding solos and deep throated growling. The piano led intro of ’Facing The Echoes’ showcases the band’s ability to use some well measured delicacies. With little in the way of deliberation the track erupts into a growling frenzy, backed with fully loaded guitars riffs to keep the adrenaline soaring high. Meanwhile, the blistering drum work found in ’Flat line’ conjures some serious mosh pit stirring energy as everything shifts into an exhilarating pace. Another high point where the record really shines is in the weighty bass and classical tones of ‘Passion For Infinity’. A track that stands these guys on equal footing as Dark Tranquillity. Personal favourite, ‘Dark Dream Dawn’ comes with a serious kick as well as bleak sounding tapestry carved from the use of keys scattered throughout the verse and chorus sections.

The remainder of the record feels fairly consistent with striking an impressive balance between pulse racing Death Metal and symphonic texturing which certainly helps to keep things interesting. The production is well refined and comes with enough clarity to dissect some of the subtleties being used throughout. Closing everything off in style, ’Author of Arts’ comes technical riffs, ecstatic drums and harsh sounding growls that are as relentless as ever. However, it is the climactic guitar shred around halfway through that set this as a worthy point to depart upon.

With a strong sensibility for song structures and a talented bunch of musicians backing this record up there really isn’t a weak track found on this album. With this in mind it would have been interesting to hear slightly more variation in the vocals and some more room for the band’s orchestral tendencies to take centre stage. However, I would regard this as an essential purchase for any Melodic Death Metal fan out there looking for something that is both violent and refreshing upon the ears.
