Dead Soul Tribe
A Murder of Crows
October 2003
Released: 2003, Insideout
Rating: 4.0/5

DST get my vote for one of the cleverest album titles and covers of the year. The play on words will not be lost on you when you see it. DST sophomore effort is somewhat darker and a shade heavier than the debut. It is a little more streamlined more metal and less prog and the guitars seem more up front to my ears, likely due the change in gu

Devon is still the master writing, producing and singing. Still not as heavy as Psychotic Waltz used to be it still has a some good guitar crunch but not so much in the way of extensive soloing. This feels more like band project as time progresses with the songs creating a signature style that is different and recognizable, which is hard to do in what some might say (not me!) a crowded prog metal genre.

The drum work on ‘I’m Not Waving’ is phenomenal and we even gets hints of double bass work on cuts like ‘Flies’. The song ‘Regret’ is dark and heavy while being catchy. The individual performances are all very tight and the band at times is starting to venture closer into territory of bands like Wolverine and Zero Hour in terms of the execution and deliver of heavier prog sounds. It’s not surprising as Devon revealed that some of the songs on this CD were originally written for Pyschotic Waltz. Well worth checking out.
