Death Du Jour
Gamashinoch
February 2004
Released: 2004, Independent
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Waspman

Woah. This is a severe ass-kicking if there ever was one. These four lads from Finland have only been together since anno 2000 but they already sound like old veterans. I swear this is the most “together” self-released death metal CD I think I’ve ever heard. But I’m getting ahead of myself a bit here. As I said, formed in 2000 by TK and PB, Death Du Jour started out as, of all things, an industrial-metal band (!?!). Thankfully, in 2004 the band found a real flesh and blood drummer, and things immediately began going in a different direction, namely towards the intense death that is pummeling me as I write this.

GAMASHINOCH is a feast for fans of technical, complex, and above all aggressive death metal. Absolutely vicious for beginning to end, this MCD will leave you battered and broken in a mere 17 minutes. TF’s drumming is relentless pounding at its best, best exemplified by his palpitation-inducing performance on “Artificial Excessive Excessivities”. Thank Satan these guys decided to ditch the drum machine. The labyrinthine song structures are tough to get a handle on at first, as each song whips and thrashes through so many moods and riffs that there’s no way to keep up. Yet somehow the longest song on here is 5:18. Amazing.

The thing that will pull you through the initial haze is the absolute enthralling vocal performance of TK. His growl is vicious enough to send 90% of other death metal vocalists scurrying away in terror. I’ll be damned if I know what he’s saying, but it certainly scares the bejeezus out of me!

Some quality label needs to snap these guys up quickly, because this stuff is too good to languish in the DIY zone. Get on the bandwagon early and support this band!
