Deathwitch
Violence Blasphemy Sodomy
March 2004
Released: 2004, Wicked World Rating: 3.5/5 Reviewer: Lord of the Wasteland Deathwitch’s latest offering is ugly as sin, muddy as a Kentucky rainstorm and sloppy as a Manwich, but if you like your metal fast, furious and unrefined, this will be a very satisfying listen. VIOLENCE BLASPHEMY SODOMY embodies Deathwitch’s “we don’t give a fuck about anything” attitude and they even go so far as stating it as such right on the promo’s back cover! Vocalist Terror spews anger, hatred, blasphemy and general mayhem behind the mike, while Dan Slaughter stomps out thunderous double-bass beats. Slade Doom even offers up some great riffs in spots, which is uncommon for this type of metal. Technically, Deathwitch is spot on, but the production (I’m sure purposefully) is less than stellar. Lyrically, there are more curse words here than a Quentin Tarantino movie and the song titles are as tongue-in-cheek and ridiculous as they come (“Blood Sucking Fuck,” “Coffin Fornicator,” “Bitchfinder”), but I can’t deny that Deathwitch does this shtick well. A Charles Manson interview clip opens the CD and it becomes instantly apparent that these guys are a sinister bunch. “Flamethrower, “Total Morbid” and “Witch of Death” feature smoking riffs and standout vocal performances from Terror. “Lord of Ymodos” is an instrumental track that will make your subwoofer rumble. “Necrosodomizer” is whiplash-inducing to any headbanger worth his mettle, with its speedy drum fills and buzzsaw riffs. In the song, Terror repeats, “I am the necrosodomizer” so often and so convincingly that I began to think to myself, “Goddamn it, he IS the necrosodomizer!!!!!!” “Death Maniac” has a cool groove to it and a stunning drum performance from Slaughter. The closing of the track caps off the CD with nearly a full minute of cacophonous feedback and reverb. Deathwitch is hardly a one-dimensional metal band and I commend them for showing it on this disc. On the back of the promo sleeve, it reads “Note to Journalists: Deathwitch don’t give a FUCK what you think.” Well, in any case, here is what I think. This isn’t the type of CD I will grab regularly but for the occasional spin when I feel the need to flail around in my garage, it gets the job done. I bet these guys put on a kick-ass show, too! KILLER KUTS: “Flamethrower,” “Total Morbid,” “Witch of Death,” “Necrosodomizer” ![]()
