Hidden Gem Review

This Mini CD is the very first Dark Tranquillity release without former vocalist Anders Friden who at this point joined his current band In Flames. I do believe that when the Gothenburg boys recorded this 4 track jewel they were experimenting on how the band would sound with their new singer, former guitarist Mikael Stanne but that’s beside the point.

The point is that this here, is a must have (of everyone has it now because it was included in the re-issue of the band’s debut SKYDANCER, but it wasn’t always so.). On OF CHAOS AND ETERNAL night you get 4 examples of Dark Tranquillity at their very best. The title track, “Of Chaos and Eternal Night” features awesome melodies, “Flaming shades of Fall” gives you an example of the band’s slower tunes with an emphasis on Stanne’s excellent vocal work and “Away, Delight, Away” just blows you away with all the intensity a band should have to make it big time. On this last song, the lead guitar is just unbelievable, I had never heard anything as impressive musically as this was and it still remains one of my favorite all time songs. The fourth song is a different version of “Alone” (also featured on SKYDANCER), which really brings us just a different perspective on the song’s feeling.

In all, it might be useless to buy this album now since it’s included in the re-issue of SKYDANCER from 1996, but I wanted to do a different review since I got the 2 albums separately many years ago and they both made a big impression on me.
