Converge
Jane Doe
June 2002
Released: 2002, Equal Vision Records
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Waspman

Picked this one up used on a whim, having seen it recommended by a ton of people. Never heard of Converge before this, so I was going in blind (deaf, if you prefer) and boy was I knocked on my ass by JANE DOE! Never have I heard such a cogent cacophony before. Quite simply, this is one of the sickest, angriest records I’ve ever heard, to the point of making the listener uncomfortable.

I guess you could put Converge in the hardcore arena, but they really are a genre unto themselves. There are similarities with many bands in their music, but these pass quickly before you’re dragged back into the tornado. The whole sound is a churning wreckage, bass and guitars meshed together in some kind of unholy coupling as the drums pound like the hips of lovers, whose tortured screeches vocalist Jacob Bannon emits. Don’t know where that description came from, but it somehow seems apt as I sit here listening to the album.

With songs like “Concubine”, “Homewrecker”, and “Bitter and then some”, it’s not hard to figure out the subject matter of this disc: broken hearts and shattered relationships. At least, that’s what I think the album is about seeing as how I can’t understand 95% of what Bannon hollers. His voice is used more as a percussive instrument, rather than as a true “singer”.

I know I’m not giving the best description of this disc, but it’s about the best that I can do considering what I’m hearing. Yep, this is bizarre stuff to say the least. Different and unmatched, Converge are on a level unto themselves. A tortured, and torturing, genius has been unleashed.
