Confessor
Blueprint Soul
March 2005
Released: 2004, Independent
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: EvilG

If doomy prog metal is your thing, then you’re gonna love this. Some of you might remember Confessor from back in the earlier 90’s. After a short but promising career the band broke up and since then they’ve even tragically lost one member. In the past couple of yours the band has reunited and BLUEPRINT SOUL is our first taste of new material from the reformed band.

BLUEPRINT SOUL is a 3-song demo, containing 3 cohesive tracks of progressive doom metal. On first listen the three bands that came to my mind were Sabbath, Alice in Chains, and Memory Garden. If you take a mix of those three bands, you’ll have a general idea on what to expect. The opening song, “Hibernation” chugs along with some cool riffing and plenty of interesting timings and patterns. The opening vocal section of “Blueprint Soul” is a clear nod to Layne Stanley (RIP) from Alice in Chains. This sounds very cool and the vocals, all cleanly sung, are the main thing that attracts me to this band. “Sour Times” continues at the slow doomy pace. This is where I get to the point of wishing for some faster material. This is well done, but man, I crave some speed! The chorus of “Sour Times” is great featuring the best vocals on this demo and this is my favorite track of the 3.

I look forward to hearing a full album of material from Confessor...with any luck later this year. I just hope the album is a little more diverse than this demo. I’m not knocking this at all, if you like prog-doom it doesn’t get much better, so my 3/5 rating would be bumped up a bit more if I was more into slow doomy songs. The fact that Confessor has me liking this demo though does speak to the fact that this band will reach beyond the doom boundaries with there style.
