Crack Ov Dawn
Dawn Addict
January 2005
Released: 2004, Equilibre Music Rating: 1.5/5 Reviewer: Lord of the Wasteland French techno-goth metal is not a genre of music I can speak extensively on however I do know one thing: Crack Ov Dawn’s DAWN ADDICT is one of the most blatant Marilyn Manson rip-offs I have ever heard. I’m a big fan of Manson but this group of hacks does not have even a shred of the personality in their music that the Reverend does, nor do their cheesy, clichéd lyrics about drugs and partying hold water alongside Manson’s words. An over-reliance on keyboards and samples takes away any shred of credibility that these guys may have as musicians. This is a studio band if there ever was one. “Rise ‘n Fall” carries a beefy riff but the rest of the tracks find the guitar buried way back in the mix in favor of danceable Euro club beats. Crack Ov Dawn’s take on U2’s “Pride (In The Name of Love)” is not half bad and sounds like something Sisters of Mercy might have tried—15 years ago! I’m not sure what exactly Crack Ov Dawn’s gimmick is but whatever it is, they need to find it fast because this collection of songs is so dated, so out of touch, that it’s like the band dropped out of a time machine from 1987, looked at a picture of Marilyn Manson and decided to play old My Life With The Thrill Kill Cult songs. Slipknot drummer, Joey Jordison, has picked this release up to be reissued on his own label in North America and if all goes well, DAWN ADDICT will sell about three copies. I doubt songs about taking too many pills and ecstasy before going to a rave will be of much interest to the readers of Metal Rules. Maybe this sort of thing is popular in the European club scene but consider this a warning to any metalhead who picks it up. KILLER KUTS: “Rise ‘n Fall” ![]()
