Cipher System
Central Tunnel Eight
February 2005
Released: 2004, Lifeforce
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: MetalGeorge

Melodic Death Metal seems to be a genre that I will never be sick of. Time after time, album after album, I continually enjoy and rock out to this style, and it doesn’t seem to be fading with age, either. That’s right, I’m an addict, and Cipher System is my latest fix.

Following in the footsteps of Dark Tranquillity and Soilwork, Germany’s Cipher System create atmospheric, catchy Death/Thrash songs with complex arrangements and memorable songwriting. While the ethereal keyboards provide a light backdrop, the guitars race along with a righteous mixture of tech and melody, employing numerous solo-breaks and start/stop passages to keep things interesting.

Vocally, Daniel Scholdstrom primarily stays within a raspy growl, while producer Patrick J-Sten lends a clean sung chorus to the track “Sufferstream”. While there is certainly nothing original going on here, most Gothen-fanatics will be brought back to such albums as HAVEN and A PREDATOR’S PORTRAIT, which is most definitely a good thing.

Alongside Denmark’s Mercenary, and The Duskfall from Sweden, Cipher System provide some of the best new school melodic death I’ve checked out, and they definitely come recommended to fans of the genre. While many NWOSDM bands are labeled as being “In Flames influenced” or “reminiscent of At the Gates”, Cipher System is a band which actually echoes those bands’ greatness, rather than attempting to recreate it.

Very promising and very enjoyable.
