Hailing from Surrey, England, progressive black metal act Code describe themselves as: ‘Defying categorisation since 2002’. And they certainly have lived up to that motto with their second album release, AUGUR NOX.
Code have produced a sound which I think is best describes as Dream Theater and Paradise Lost in the same room. AUGUR NOX carries a proper theme of sorrow and personal weaknesses in its lyrics and is expressed with very catchy riffs and minimalist drum loops. Nowhere on this album is a regular blast beat or a long piece of tremolo picking. Instead opening track ‘Black Rumination’ uses a wall of guitars and classic metal drumming which kept me hooked from start to finish. ‘Ecdysis’ continued this gimmick and I then felt I was listening to a more progressive version of Cradle of Filth as the prog rock infused riffs carried the bands melancholy to a whole new level.
This is certainly the most avant-garde record I’ve heard all year which comes similar to the recent Eibon La Furies record in its minimalist sound. Instrumental track ‘DX’ comes with a mystical feel with tribal style instruments and morose chanting that sent shivers up the spine. And to top that, ‘The Lazarus Code’ immediately split the calm and carried the second half of the album to a greater level than the first.
Overall this is a very impressive piece of experimental Black Metal which I would recommend for anyone who’s looking for anything dark and progressive. A symphony showing how clean vocals work in an extreme sub genre famous for its incoherent screams.
