Chuck Schuldiner
Zero Tolerance
July 2004
Released: 2004, Karmageddon media/ Sound Pollution
Rating: 0.5/5
Reviewer: Anders Sandvall

Chuck Schuldiner started to record an album called “CONTROL DENIED” before he tragically passed away. Before his death he landed a contract with this label and started to work on the record “CONTROL DENIED” which was, as I understand, almost finished. The label isn’t sure what’s going to happen with the finished album because the Schuldiner family refuses to release it. Therefore, the label decided to release this album instead.

This album contains 4 rehearsal tracks that sound really rough with only Chuck on guitar (and an overdub on a second guitar plus solo guitar) and Richard Christy (Iced Earth) on drums.

To make a whole CD out of the material they have also added 2 demos, “INFERNAL DEATH” from '85 and “MUTILATION” from '86. The demos are taken from tape copies. The company has tried to master the demos to the best quality but they failed with that big time. It all sounds like a really bad bootleg. Unfortunately, I haven’t the names for the other guys who play on these demos.

The guy who has written the booklet says that it now was the right time to release this album. I don't know who this guy is because it only signs off as Hammerheart Records (now Karmageddon Media).

I have only negative things to say about this sad album. The first 4 songs consist only of guitar and drums and it’s incredibly boring to listen to. Add to that the lack of titles on the 4 first songs then you understand how boring this is. The quality of the next 6 demo tracks are below all possible standards, they sound extremely poor to say the least. They haven’t put any effort on doing a nice cover either. I liked Death, and it would have been really fun to hear these demos with a very young Chuck playing Death songs. But the sound quality is so bad it really hurts my ears to listen to this.

It feels like the company’s only purpose with this album is to earn money from the fans on the fact that Chuck has passed away. It is in very bad taste to release this in this state. I can’t recommend this to anyone, not even to dedicated fans of Death. Instead I think you all should boycott all attempts to release such shit! The Schuldiner family is un-willing to release “CONTROL DENIED” and instead the label chooses to release this instead. What does that say about the company? I think it’s only to respect the family’s wish and pay respect to them.
