The Preachings of Hate Are Lord
March 2010
Released: 2010, Woodcut Records
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: Luxi Lahtinen

Chthonian is back, an extreme Finnish black/death metal band led by Matias Lillmåns, the current vocalist of Finntroll. Chthonian released their debut album, OF BEATINGS AND THE SILENCE IN BETWEEN in 2007, and since then silence descended around this musical abomination... or so we believed anyway. In all silence, the Chthonian troops were getting ready for their 2nd attack that comes in the form of their 2nd album, THE PREACHINGS OF HATE ARE LORD, featuring 8 new cuts - and at the same time introducing also Staffan Holmnäs as the band´s 2nd guitarist.

THE PREACHINGS OF HATE ARE LORD basically contains the same recipe for musical mass destruction as the band´s debut already did; a recipe that blends elements both from black and death metal with a slightly avantgarde-ish touch. The songs are full of immeasurable rage; they are vicious and deadly by nature – filled with deep antichristian views, and most of the time moving forward with crushing and murderous speeds. They just sound charming enough to make you cut your wrists with a sharpened, burning pentagram.

Even if Matias is more known as the frontman of Finntroll these days, people should check out his ´side project´ Chthonian too, as there´s never enough well churned out and produced black metal (with a twist of death metal) that can make a difference. Chthonian uses the same raging hyper-speeds in their songs like Dark Funeral does on their albums, just adding more of those calmer and more atmospheric and avantgarde-tinged, venomous spice into their own cauldron of hate and despise. “The Filthmonger” is a pretty good example of Chthonian´s way to keep things a little bit out of black metal´s standard norms. It´s a heavy, mid-paced creeper that crawls on your skin like a blood-sucking parasite while a song like “Oppose, Enlighten” finally separates your body from your soul with its pure injection of nicely avant-garde blend of both black and death metal.

Chthonian´s THE PREACHINGS OF HATE ARE LORD serves the fans of extreme side of metal well, and I bet this album will raise some interest in both the black and death metal community as well.
