Cartographer
February 2017
Released: 2nd , Self Release
Rating: 4.0/5

'Cartographer' by the band Chronologist is a self released album. They are an instrumental Progressive Metal band for fans who like Scale the Summit, Periphery, and BTBAM. The band formed in 2013 and they have released an EP and Single prior to this release. Having relocated to greater Austin, TX in the Autumn of 2016 they feature a range of technically skilled musicians who have produced an album of prog. metal delights. I must admit it took me a few listens to get into the album but having now done that I find its very engaging and consistent in sound and intensity.

It features Evan Sammons (Drummer of Last Chance To Reason) assisting for drum tracking and I must admit as a drummer I felt a less perfect performance would have been more convincing. On this note the album is produced to perfection and lacks a certain realism but still very good for a first album by the band. Stand out tracks for me include San Juan and Key Chains, which featured a really enjoyable piano ending, as they offered to variety to the overall sound scape.

In conclusion I would say this is an excellent first album and would appeal to any fans of progressive instrumental metal. If you want to check them out then follow the Facebook link although they have a website this is still in development at this time. I think if your looking for vocal lead commercial metal and rock then look else where.
