Charnel House
Sample of Murder
August 2001
Released: 2000, Independent
Rating: 2.5/5
Reviewer: Rick

SAMPLE OF MURDER is a 5 song sampler of songs that will appear on the upcoming Charnel House CD FROM BIRTH TO BURIAL. Charnel House has been around for the past 9 years and are set to release their latest Cd sometime this summer. In the past Charnel House has opened for the likes of Overkill, Napalm Death, Bolt Thrower, Cannibal Corpse and Malevolent Creation. Needless to say this is a very impressive resume so I was very interested to hear what this band was capable of. As I said SAMPLE OF MURDER is only 5 songs so this will be just a quick introduction to the band. "Of Blood and Bone" kicks of the disc with a heavy groovy that breaks down about half way through into an old school thrash, almost Slayeresque sound. Great tune. "Dance of the Dead" is a little faster than most songs on this disc. This song reminds me of long defunct Thrash act Sacrament and their tune "Psycho Flower". "Comatose in a Coffin" starts out like a house afire and keeps hold of the listener as singer John Kings grunts and growls his way through his tale of misery.

Overall this is a good set of tunes. the promo material describes the band as a new sound on a far too generic scene. To me Charnel House don’t have a totally new sound. Sure they mix deathy vocals with groovy thrash but to me this sounds like something I have heard before. Though like I said this is only a sampler and I look forward to hearing the full length once its released.
