Brew Records out of the UK keeps coming up with these out of the ordinary avant-garde Metal bands, and for the most part they're pretty damned interesting. Chickenhawk, out of the rocking UK town of Leeds, have followed up their critically acclaimed debut album with this EP, A. OR NOT?, a raucous bundle of aggression and experimentation. Easily more accessible than some of Brew's other artists, Chickenhawk work with melody and chugging riffage, spawning strange yet headbangable Metal.
EP opener 'I Hate This, Do You Like It', grows ferociously to an apex of cadence and rhythm, building to a maddening outro of epic speed and power. Covered with a bunch of tasty riffs, the opener is so damn delicious that the other two tunes are just dessert, but a tasty one. 'Nasa Vs. Esa' an epic jammy tune pitting space agencies against each other, features some nice guitar work, again some diamond riffs, and some monumental screeching vocals.
Far more accessible than some other avant-garde artists, Chickenhawk gathers no moss, rolling through these three tunes, leaving you wanting more, admiring the creativity and possible genius. Only time will tell where these blokes eventually land, but there's certainly an opportunity to find wider audiences. All the elements are there. Riffs, melody, and indefinable individuality.
