Released: 2004, Independent
Rating: 4.0/5

These Vancouver locals caught my ear when they opened for Kick Axe at a small club this past November. Catapult vocalist/acoustic guitarist Myk Shaflik was passing out demos throughout the gig and I was fortunate enough to grab one. Catapult’s music is a blend of hard rock with some prog tinges and a bit of southern influence, as well. Shaflik’s use of acoustic guitar really adds an interesting sound to the band’s music giving it an earthy, organic aura over and above what an electric guitar can.

“Bury Me” is a good rocker and the killer riff at the conclusion of the song really adds some punch to the track. “Find Out” is reminiscent of Alice In Chains with its use of vocal harmonies, while the southern groove of “Regretful Words” is not unlike Monster Magnet’s “Spacelord.” These are solid hard rock originals done well by veterans of the local music scene.

If the three songs on this demo are any indication of what Catapult is capable of, I can’t wait to hear a full-length from them. Their music is heavy enough to appeal to an open-minded headbanger but catchy enough for modern rock radio. In other words, these guys have the recipe for success.
