Catharsis
Rhyming Life and Death
August 2014
Released: 2014, Mad Lion Records
Rating: 2.0/5
Reviewer: Aaron Yurkiewicz

Poland’s Catharsis categorize themselves as “technical death metal”, but after listening to their latest full length RHYMING LIFE AND DEATH, that statement’s really only partially true. To brand yourself as a “technical” death metal band, there’s an expectation of a certain degree of musical prowess. That being said, the 7 tracks on RHYMING LIFE AND DEATH aspire for greatness, but restraints in execution keep it grounded in mediocrity.

There’s plenty of attitude and intent across RHYMING LIFE AND DEATH, but the songs rely too much on oversimplified death riffing that don’t do much to differentiate themselves. And save for a few moments on songs like “Those Who Have Never Risen” or “Ecological Death”, most of the passages that are intended to sound epic sound underprepared for the mission at hand. It’s not like the band isn’t trying though; “The Art of Life” in particular hints at what the possibilities could’ve been with its dueling guitar and bass runs crawling over each other for dominance. Give me an album full of songs like this and I’ll rethink my position.

Credit where credit is due though, the rhythm section do A LOT of the heavy lifting across the album, particularly bassist Adam Mamok, whose constantly running fingers help to keep things interesting. If you’re a fan of either the four string or percussive disciplines, RHYMING LIFE AND DEATH might pique your interest, otherwise you’ve got plenty of other better qualified bands vying for your attention. Regardless though, show Catharsis some love and check out their website for samples and video links.
