Carpe Tenebrum
Dreaded Chaotic Reign
December 2002
Released: 2002, Hammerheart Records
Rating: 4.6/5
Reviewer: The Punishment Due

Carpe Tenebrum is a one-man band created by former Dimmu Borgir and The Kovenant guitarist Astennu. The first two CDs released were black metal similar to that of his former band Dimmu Borgir, but DREADED CHAOTIC REIGN is very much a straight ahead death metal album with lots of heavy riffing and brutality in the newer era Morbid Angel vain.

Astennu proves himself to be a very good all round musician on this CD, with great riffing, interesting song structuring, nice solos and good technical displays. His drumming is very precise and effective with a big emphasis on pummeling double bass and blasts. Each song is made up of different sections where the tempo and general feel of songs interchange and flow very well. Sometimes a song is really fast tempo, with downtuned thrashy riffing and changing between straight forward thrash-style drumming and fast paced blast beats, as he delivers deep gut-wrenching vocals. On the other hand, there’s slow paced, sludgy riffing and monotone chopper double bass like Morbid Angel ala DOMINATION/GATWAYS. Think of the song “Where The Slime Live.” His riffing style is actually not that different from Trey Azagthoth as a whole, so if you like the later era Morbid Angel this will probably interest you.

Like Morbid Angel, the third track is one them keyboard instrumentals like “Melting” and “Awakening.” This is very solid death metal and quite brilliant seeing as it’s one man who does everything – no drum machine here, this is the real deal!

Not much else I can say about it. If you like Morbid Angel from DOMINATION onwards, this is definitely for you. A few songs that really grabbed me were “Abiding Our Time” and “What Of This Place.” I can’t get enough of this, and it’ll stand high in my 2002 top 20.
