Before The Damned
March 2011
Released: 2010, Independent
Rating: 4.5/5
Reviewer: Celtic Bob

Before The Damned started out as a writing and drinking experiment in an old furniture warehouse in London, Ont back in 2007. The then trio entered the studio with a local producer who recommended a drummer and thus Before The Damned as we now know it was formed.

This independent debut contains all the essential elements of a great Metal album. There are heavy riffs, pounding drums and at times brutal vocals. what began as a drinking experiment has quickly turned into one of the best Metal albums to hit your speakers. To give you an idea on their sound, you will hear a heavy Pantera influence in many spots. Other than that there is no obvious influence. UNANIMOSITY is the quintessential Metal release but in a few instances (too many actually) the over the top extreme vocals kill an otherwise killer track. Patterson’s vocals are powerful and fantastic when he chooses to utilize his voice to the fullest but it is in the few extreme cases where it doesn’t do the songs justice.

Musically the album is pretty consistent and solid. The only drawback is in a few vocal spots. For a new band on the scene that’s only minor criticism as I am sure there are many, many people out there that enjoy that particular style of ‘Singing’. It just doesn’t do anything for me. You can however guarantee this is one new band that I will keep following.
