Hurry up and get in line for another death metal band from Sweden! Bone Gnawer are a Death/Gore/Horror band, that take inspiration from the swamps of Florida’s death metal and meld it with Sweden’s own take on the genre. Kam Lee, formerly of Massacre is the bands frontman and throat master, spewing forth blood soaked lyrics that would make Cannibal Corpse proud. The rest of the band are seasoned veterans from other death and black metal bands, notably Morgan Lie on drums, who previously played with Naglfar. FEAST OF FLESH is the band’s debut album on Pulverised Records.
Lyrically, this is just a splatter horror movie with no redeeming or thought provoking value. Few bands make a dent on the larger metal world using this type of subject matter, Cannibal Corpse being one of the few exceptions. Song titles like “Sliced and Diced”, “Hammer To The Skull”, and “Defleshed and Skinned” are just way too predictable and lame to be taken seriously from a lyrical point of view. In fairness, there is some tongue-in-cheek humor though, as evidenced by “Cannibal Cook-Out” which has a cool mid-paced tempo and chug.
No, this album will not win converts with any lyrical prowess, but the music is just fine, thanks. The guitars bulldoze and the drum work is stellar, the production really giving the album a thick and heavy sound. This album is actually closer to old school death metal than Swedish death metal. Singer Kam is fairly discernible on many passages, which is unusual with this style of music. The vocal style borders on death/thrash, avoiding constant bowel grinding growls. The band also varies the tempos, occasionally going into hyper speed, but also providing plenty of slow downs and mid-paced riffing.
Despite the technical proficiency and excellent production, FEAST OF FLESH also is a bit repetitive and calculated. There is nothing truly groundbreaking here, but it does make for a good and entertaining listen, while leaving little lasting impact. Gore/Horror death metal has always been a niche genre. Serious fans of this style of music will appreciate the professional execution of Bone Gnawer and their faithful adherence to old school death metal and the gore genre.
