Released: 2014, AFM Records
Brainstorm has enjoyed a good reputation here at Metal-Rules.com with a run of six superb albums over eight years. Then somehow things went a little south. The band floundered for about five years releasing three albums (DOWNBURST, MEMORIAL ROOTS, ON THE SPUR OF THE MOMENT) which were not poor, just not to the bands usually standards. Fortunately, the band is back and with their 10th album FIRESOUL they have recaptured their fire.
The band is still on AFM Records and since the last album in 2011 there have been no lineup changes. The band has been very stable over the years with very few line-up changes over their 24 years. The album cover takes us back to theme of the cover art of SOUL TEMPTATION with a giant, winged demon-chick bathed in fire. Hot!
From the opening strike of the lighter heralding the opening track ‘Erased By The Dark’ it is readily apparent that the band is back in full-force. FIRESOUL is a streamlined 10 songs of Power Metal done in the classic Germanic style. The voice of Andy is so identifiable and powerful, he is still a highlight of the band. The songs all have grit and crunch and healthy does of speed. The riffs are classic Metal riffs backed by the thundering rhythm section. Every song is strong not too elaborate in terms of composition, but catchy and melodic as well as retaining that head-banging heaviness. The album ends on a slower note with a power and moving power ballad called ‘…And I Wonder’. There are no weak tracks on FIRESOUL and this is my favourite album since LIQUID MONSTER.
It is a bit of a cliché but the Brainstorm I knew and fell in love with is back and this album sets my soul on fire!
